What are the rules of roller derby?

Although we are not affiliated, we go by the WFTDA Rules set for our scrimmages and bouts. There are about 60 pages of rules. There are also over 15 penalties that are given during a jam when rules are broken. i.e. Back Block, MultiPlayer Block, and Cutting the track to name a few.

The referees use a series of hand signals to communicate to one another and skaters. Skaters are quizzed on the rules through an online test before they are considered ‘bout’ ready. Rules can be found at WFTDA dot com. Support your local Roller Derby!

NEW SKATER QUESTIONS

How do I join?

We are currently holding an open recruitment concept for new skaters. We have a checklist of what skills you will need in order to join in on the drills. Once everything is checked off you’re on your way to become a Roller Derby super star. Contact us about joining!

Where do I start?

You don’t need any experience to join. We can teach you how to skate Roller Derby style, but you must be committed to doing your part. The New Skater Roller Derby checklist is available to review at any practice. Minimum Skills can be achieved in as little as 12-16 consistent practices and usually there is a year-long learning curve with the amount of information you will start to consume. Please feel free to visit us at Spinnations 8345 Congress St, Port Richey, FL 34668 every Tuesday night from 7:30-9:30 pm.

Are there any specific requirements?

We accept all skill levels. Roller derby is a full contact sport, so you must maintain a certain level of endurance, get your check-list done, and gain those skills needed in order to participate in drills and scrimmages. It is true that there are positions in Roller Derby suited for all body types. Roller Derby is about skill, not necessarily size or strength. It takes all kinds. MUST be 18 years or older to play. We allow 12 and up volunteers please send an email to: [email protected] for more details.

We have three teams in our league, our all women’s team The Valkyries. Mixed gender team(s) Mom & Pop’s Militia and ReMx. All are eligible for travel and home bouts. Must have a checklist and minimum skills assessment done to try out for any team roster. Attendance is also considered for eligibility.

WHAT ARE YOUR COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS?

We love a healthy environment. Who doesn’t? Keep your gear and hands as clean as possible. Don’t cough on people. Please stay home if you’re sick. TBD

How do I get a spot on the team?

You must have your checklist completed and minimum skills assessment done by a managing direct training committee or a vet skater  to try out for any team roster. Attendance is also considered for eligibility. You can be fast tracked right along to a team. That’s up to you though.

What is the time requirement?

We practice every Tuesday at Spinnations in Port Richey. Thursday will be a trail skate or other Roller Derby activity assigned. We suggest that you come to both in order to stay on track.
